Western Australia's Ultimate Bucket List: Adventures You Can’t Miss

Australia’s west coast is a paradise of rugged landscapes, stunning beaches, and unique wildlife. Whether you're planning a road trip from Perth to Broome or exploring hidden gems along the coastline, having a bucket list ensures you make the most of your adventure. Here are some must-do experiences for your ultimate west coast Australian journey!

Indigenous Tours

Western Australia is home to rich and diverse Aboriginal cultures. There are so many ways to learn about this important part of Australia's history: visit cultural centers, join guided tours led by Indigenous people, and learn about the deep connection they have with the land.

Rottnest Island

Just off the coast of Perth, Rottnest Island is home to the adorable quokka, often called the “happiest animal on Earth.” Rent a bike, explore the island’s stunning beaches, and snap a selfie with one of these friendly marsupials.

Margaret River

Western Australia’s Margaret River region is a must-visit for wine lovers. Known for its world-class wineries, breathtaking coastal scenery, and gourmet food, this region offers an unforgettable experience. I’m saving this experience for when my mom comes to visit, as I know she’ll appreciate the incredible wine and beautiful landscapes as much as I will. I can't wait to explore it with her and make some amazing memories! We plan to compare the wines here to those from Upstate New York, where my college is located (which is also known an important producer of wine), and to the renowned wines of France where I grew up. I can't wait to see how it compares!

Visit Fremantle and Its Historic Attractions

Fremantle is a vibrant port city filled with history, culture, and unique attractions. One of its must-visit sites is the Fremantle Prison Museum, a UNESCO World Heritage-listed site that provides a fascinating insight into Australia’s convict history. It also has the WA ShipWreck Museum. Wander through the charming streets, explore the markets, and enjoy the lively arts and music scene that makes Fremantle a special destination.

Yanchep National Park

One of the top experiences on my Western Australia bucket list is exploring Yanchep National Park—a place that perfectly captures the region’s wildlife and natural beauty. My recent visit gave me a glimpse of its friendly kangaroos, sleepy koalas, and stunning birdlife, but there’s still so much more to see. Next time, I’d love to hike more of its scenic trails and visit the Crystal Cave, a hidden underground wonder filled with shimmering stalactites and stalagmites. With its mix of adventure and wildlife, Yanchep is definitely a place I want to return to.

The Pinnacles Desert

Another must-visit spot is the Pinnacles Desert, located within Nambung National Park. These towering limestone formations create an almost alien-like landscape, and I can only imagine how surreal it must look at sunset or under a sky full of stars. I’ve heard it’s one of the best stargazing spots in Australia. The idea of walking among these ancient rock formations, shaped by thousands of years of wind and sand, makes the Pinnacles an absolute must-see on my list!

As I continue checking off my Western Australia bucket list, I know there will always be more to explore. This journey is just the beginning, and I can’t wait to experience more of the stunning landscapes, fascinating history, and incredible wildlife this part of the world has to offer. If you're planning your own adventure, I hope this list inspires you to embrace the beauty and excitement of Australia's west coast!

PS: I will continue editing this list throughout my stay here, so if there's anything else I discover & explore that is worthwhile, I'll make sure to add it to this list!
